picsThis book came about because of a flooded basement. Seriously. Several years ago, we had a really bad storm and our basement flooded. During a post-flood inventory, I came across a photograph that I hadn’t seen in decades. It was a photograph of me, and my brothers, dressed up as the butcher, the baker and the candlestick maker. I also couldn’t, for the life of me recall how it came to be in my possession. The picture was taken during the summer of 1972 when we spent eight weeks at the Highland Park Bungalow Colony in upstate New York. It took me to a time and to a place and to people that I had forgotten. Perhaps misplaced would be a better way of stating it. As I tallied up the flood’s toll, I felt that this photograph made it for a reason. That, perhaps the memories it carried with it, were worth uncovering and revisiting; that they were worth having survived. And that’s how Sunburned & Circumcised came to be.

Music is one of the most powerful reminders of a particular time in one’s life – even a particular moment. With that in mind, here’s a Spotify Playlist featuring some of the songs that I heard during that very special summer of 1972.

In Sunburned and Circumcised I go into quite a bit of detail about the sangria that our parents used to concoct with great regularity. While the original recipe is lost to time this one is probably pretty close to it. Enjoy responsibly.
